Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Loss To Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (10/28/08) -   The Colgate University men’s soccer team fell to Duke University, 1-0, in Tuesday night non-conference action at Koskinen Stadium.  Sophomore Nick Sih scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to give the No. 22 ranked Blue Devils the shutout victory.

The Raiders, who wrapped up their nonconference schedule, drop to 8-5-3 overall while Duke improves to 9-5-2 this season.

Colgate started off strong in the first half with their first of several scoring opportunities coming in the 18th minute of play.  Sophomore Jeff Leach (New Canaan, Conn.) got past the Duke defense and tried to get a shot over the head of Blue Devils’ goalkeeper Jan Trnka-Amhrein.  Trnka-Amhrein tallied his first save of the game to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard.

Colgate’s next opportunity came from senior Matt Leach (New Canaan, Conn.) in the 29th minute, but once again Trnka-Amhrein was there to make the save for the Blue Devils.

Duke’s leading scorer Mike Grella took the Blue Devils first shot on goal, but Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) made the save to keep it tied 0-0 heading into the half-time break.

The Colgate defense was able to hold back the Blue Devils for much of the second half, but Duke was finally able to take advantage of a free kick about 50 yards out.  Grella got the ball into the box where Sih was able to get it past Cappuccio, putting the Blue Devils up 1-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

The Raiders had a few more close shots in the final minutes, but Duke was able to hold on for their fourth consecutive shutout.

Duke held a slight advantage in corner kicks 5-2, but the two teams were even in shots, 11-11.  Cappuccio had three saves in the Colgate loss.

The Raiders will be back in action this Saturday, Nov. 1 when they host American University at 7:30 on Van Doren Field.
